Most founders think they've tried delegation. What they've actually tried is task-tossing: handing someone an activity with half the context and hoping the result matches the picture in their head. When it doesn't, they conclude 'it's faster to do it myself' — and the ceiling on the company becomes the founder's calendar.
Delegate outcomes, not activities
- Define the outcome — what does 'done and good' look like, specifically?
- Transfer the standard — show a good example and a bad one, and explain the difference.
- Agree on checkpoints — review early drafts, not final disasters.
- Give real authority — the decisions that belong to the outcome go with it.
The uncomfortable part
Delegation is a system you build, and the first version costs more time than doing the work yourself. That's the investment. Founders who refuse it stay operators forever. Founders who make it get something rare: a company that grows while they think.
